James Dickey Newsletter, Volume One, Number One, appeared in Fall 1984, under the supervision of the founding editor, Joyce M. Pair, Ph.D., professor of English at DeKalb College, Atlanta, GA. A distinguished Editorial Board provided invaluable start-up advice as well as on-going support. The original board included Matthew J. Bruccoli, University of South Carolina; Louis D. Rubin, Jr. , Editor of Algonquin Press; Dave Smith, Virginia Commonwealth; Monroe Spears (1916-1998), Professor Emeritus Rice Institute; Floyd C. Watkins, Jr., Emory University; and Calhoun Winton, University of Maryland. Richard J. Calhoun, a member of the original Advising/Contributing Editorial Board, has since joined the senior board.

Equally distinguished members of an Advising/Contributing Editorial panel provided practical guidance and support necessary to a new publication. The original editors include Ronald Baughman, University of South Carolina; David Bottoms (whose help and advice were essential), Georgia State University; Jane Bowers-Hill, University of Georgia; Richard J. Calhoun, Clemson University; Fred Chappell, University of North Carolina at Greensboro; Robert C. Covel, Graduate Program, Georgia State University; Robert W. Hill, Clemson University; T. R.Hummer, Kenyon College; Laurence Lieberman, University of Illinois; Hugh Moore, Georgia Institute of Technology; Gordon Van Ness, who at that time at University of South Carolina completing his dissertation on Dickey's work under the guidance of Matthew J. Bruccoli; Bruce Weigl, Old Dominion University; and Lamar York, DeKalb Community College. These Dickey scholars have contributed much to both James Dickey Newsletter and the field of Dickey authorship and critical studies.

Other Dickey scholars have served as Advising/Contributing Editors: they are Edith Blicksilver, Georgia Institute of Technology; Elizabeth Boleman-Herring, Clemson University; Douglas Keesey, CalPoly Institute of Technology; Robert Kirschten, University of Ohio; Jonathan Little; Rick Lott, Arkansas State University;T. W. Stanford, University of America; Catholic Ernest Suarez, Catholic University of America; and William A. Wright, Catholic University of America.

Publication twice annually, in the fall and in the spring, has continued uninterrupted. In the new millennium, James Dickey Newsletter, has relocated its editorial and publication offices to the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.

Contents of the Newsletter include literary criticism of Dickey’s work and comparative studies with works of others, as well as an on-going bibliography. Biographical information, reviews, interviews, lectures, news items, queries, and a few original poems of high quality are included. An Index is published every five years. The Index issues may be purchased separately (click here to order).

The Newsletter, assigned International Standard Series Number (ISSN) 0749-0291, is indexed in The Modern Language Association International Bibliography and The Humanities Index. It is catalogued in the Library of Congress.

Supported by subscription sales in the United States and Europe to individuals and to institutions, the James Dickey Newsletter seeks wider distribution, thus more income to continue its goal of promoting literary and educational appreciation of the work of James Dickey. In 2003-2004, the following programs at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, offered financial assistance in support of the newsletter: Department of English, Institute for Southern Studies, Preston Residential College and the College of Liberal Arts.
